About Down’s Syndrome

Approximately one in every 1000 babies born will have Down Syndrome. The majority of cases are caused by the addition of an extra No. 21 Chromosome – this is called Trisomy 21. There are also two other types of this disorder which are known as Mosaic and Translocation Down Syndrome.  It is very important to remember that Down Syndrome is not caused by anything the mother did or did not do before or during the pregnancy.

It is also important to remember that the child will still closely resemble family looks, characteristics & traits. They will develop at their own speed and with the help and possibilities available today will be able to achieve much more in the future than ever before.

Like any child, they will develop at their own speed. Some things will come easier to one child with Down Syndrome than to another, but this is no different to any child. However it will just take a little bit longer and they will need more help and encouragement.
