Essex Outdoors: Open Events and Summer Short Break Opportunities

On Monday 7 and Wednesday 9 August Essex Outdoors have Open Events at their Mersea and Danbury centres for you to come and try some of activities.
Plus there’s activity days available at the centres in Bradwell, Danbury and Harlow and day visit places at the Mersea Island Festival.
They aim to provide an amazing experience with activities you might not usually try – making them as inclusive as possible.
Open Events at Mersea and Danbury:
They will have activities running throughout each event for participants to have a go at. It’s a great way to find out more about their centres and the activities you might be able to try during one of our short break opportunities. Their Instructors will guide you through the activities and make sure you get the most from your visit.
Monday 7 August – 10am to 4pm- Essex Outdoors Mersea near Colchester, CO5 8SX
Activities available include caving, assisted climbing, adventure course, aerial runway and pedal karts – with adapted trikes provided by Trailnet.
Wednesday 9 August – 10am to 2pm – Essex Outdoors Danbury near Chelmsford, CM3 4AB
Activities available include climbing, bushcraft, obstacle course and archery – with adapted trikes provided by Trailnet.
The cost is £5 per person and supporters are free. Bring a packed lunch to eat in our dining room or elsewhere on site.

Essex Outdoors receives funding through the Essex Short Breaks programme to offer opportunities to children aged 8 to 18 with a disability to access a number of activities days, outside of school hours, with no additional cost to the participant due to their needs. Participants should live within Essex (except Southend and Thurrock Unitary Authorities). Supporters can participate in these exciting opportunities and places may be available for a sibling or friend aged 8 to 18.

Opportunities Activity Days: Weekend and school holiday activity days for disabled children supported by carers known to and organised by the child. Activities may include archery, climbing, aerial runway, adventure course and high ropes, dependent on the facilities at the chosen centre and the abilities of the participants. Participants provide their own lunch.
Sailing and Crabbing Days: Weekend and school holiday opportunities fordisabled children supported by carers known to and organised by the child. Wewill use our Bradwell 22s, a ketch rigged day boat ideally suited to all typesof groups and sea conditions. Crews can assist with hoisting and trimmingsails, helming the boat and learning the basics of sailing. We will sail acrossthe estuary and eat lunch at a suitable destination. This may be Mersea wheregroups can buy themselves an ice cream and go crabbing off the pontoon, beforesailing back to Bradwell. Participants provide their own lunch.
Chelmer Canoe Days: Starting from Paper Mill Lock on the Chelmer and Blackwater canal, enjoy a day paddling along this tranquil canal. Canoes will be rafted to ensure stability. Participants will need to provide a packed lunch. Our Bradwell staff will meet you at the Lock.
One Night Activity Break ~ 2 days of activity: One night fully cateredresidential stays in cabins for disabled children supported by carers known toand organised by the child. The programme will include two days of activity based on the ability and needs of the individuals. These may include canoeing, sailing,archery, zipwire and high ropes, dependent on the facilities at the chosen centre.
Mersea Island Festival (MIF) Day Visits – August: Funded carer places forchildren attending the Mersea Island Festival in August with a known carer fora day visit. The Mersea Island Festival is an inclusive camp that takes placeat the centre each August offering a range of indoor and outdoor activities,meals and evening entertainment.

Registration Form
When booking places for the first time, parents will be asked to complete a registration form for their child with a disability. These details will be available for subsequent visits and across all Essex Outdoors centres.
