About DS Extra 21
Who We Are
Down Syndrome Extra21 was formerly known as the North East Thames Branch of the Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA). Although still affiliated to the DSA, we are now an independent charity whose membership consist of parents, carers and people with Down syndrome.
We believe in creating space and opportunity for families to come together and to support each other. We are run by an elected committee of volunteers and our membership spreads across Essex and North East London.
Our main aims are:
- to promote equal opportunities for people with Down syndrome and create opportunities for them to take part in activities
- to promote public awareness of Down syndrome and to encourage families to learn from each other
- to provide people with access to both formal and informal information to enable them to better understand the challenge of living with Downs Syndrome
Please note that all funds raised are used to further the activities of Down Syndrome Extra21.
What We Do
Our main work is to organise social events to encourage families to meet up and share ideas.
Throughout the year we look to organise several such events which are helping to support other local groups supporting people with Downs syndrome.
We also work closely with partners including the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, West Ham United and Zinc Arts to provide opportunities to our members to take part in activities.
We provide small grants to local organisations who support our members to lead an active and inclusive life.
