Firebreak Course For Over 18’s

A chance for our over 18’s to take part in another Firebreak Course run in conjunction with Essex County Fire and Rescue services at Maldon Fire station.

During the Easter holidays a group of over 18’s will embark on a Firebreak Course run by the Essex Fire and Rescue Service. The course this year is being held at Maldon fire station over four days from 2nd – 5th April 2012. What starts with a bunch of timid and nervous teenagers soon became a group of confident young people, able to take orders on parade, climb unaided up ladders to rescue a fire fighter (dressed as a woman!!), from the tower, and administer basic first aid, as well as use hoses and a host of other skills.

The first Firebreak Course, the first of its kind anywhere in the country, was recognised at the national ‘Fire Service Equality and Diversity Awards’ 2010, which were presented by Sir Ken Knight, the Government’s Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser, at a reception in London. The Essex project was named runner up in the Service Delivery – Team Award Category. The judges agreed that the course was highly effective in building the self esteem and confidence of the young people involved. This was an emotionally challenging project which had huge benefits to all participants. It could also be easily replicated elsewhere.
